1998 Orthman Grain Cart Slip Clutch Assemblies
OSB10-98-01 October 28, 1998

PROBLEM:

Orthman Manufacturing, Inc. has received complaints about excessive slippage in the slip clutches used on 1998 production of the Orthman corner auger grain carts. The problem typically would appear with unloading wet corn and resulted in friction plates in the clutch housing becoming glazed. This would lead to greater frequencies of slippage as the cart is utilized.

SOLUTION:

Our supplier has recently completed further testing of this driveline in the field and found a higher tension spring is needed to eliminate this slippage problem. The new spring will increase the tension from 9,000 in lbs to 15,000 in lbs. Some 12,000 in lb. springs were utilized in an effort to fix this problem and they will also need to be replaced.

Orders have been placed for your dealership to receive the new spring (pt #152-516) based on grain cart orders this past year. Only grain carts shipped with a xx98-xx serial number are equipped with the new driveline assembly. Any carts carried over from last year's production are not affected by this update. Lighter springs will need to be returned to Orthman Manufacturing to receive credit on the new part. The established rate is 1 hour per driveline to disassemble/assemble. In accordance with our warranty policy, no mileage or driving time is covered.

Thank you for your cooperation in this matter. If you need to replace friction disc in the clutch assembly or have further questions concerning this update, please contact the Orthman Service Department at 800-658-3270.

Sincerely,

Gregory A. Mueller

Orthman Cat. 3/3N Quick Hitches on Deere 8000 Series Tractors
OSB12-98-01 December 8, 1998

PROBLEM:

Orthman Manufacturing, Inc. has received inquires about installing Orthman Cat. 3/3N quick hitches on John Deere 8000 Series tractors. After investigating this situation, we have found the MFWD tractors equipped with the optional lift capacity 3 point utilize a cast third arm linkage (JD Part #R122360) that is 1/4" wider than the 2" opening between the third link ears (located on top of the quick hitch frame). When the 3 point is raised, the cast linkage would wedge into the quick hitch ears and break the casting. Two wheel drive tractors utilize the standard 3 point hitch and interference is not a concern.

SOLUTION:

To use the Orthman Cat. 3/3N on a John Deere 8000 Series tractor with the optional lift capacity 3 point, the third link would have to be exchanged with the third link used on the standard 3 point hitch. If your implement weight exceeds the capacity of the standard third link, we recommend you do not exchange third links and utilize the John Deere cast quick coupler for your needs.

Orthman Manufacturing is planning modifications to our Cat 3/3N quick hitches in the future to address this change on the Deere tractors. You will be notified via a Sales bulletin when the change takes place.

Thank you for your cooperation in this matter. If you have further questions concerning this interference problem, please contact the Orthman Service Department at 800-658-3270.

Sincerely,
